Two Hour Delay Tomorrow?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

After getting 7 or so inches of snow, you’d think we could benefit from it. Well thats definitely possible. Let me fill you in on what I saw as I did my afternoon/night drive.

Liberty/Century HS- Lots completely plowed with a couple patches of snow/ice.

Eldersburg ES- Plowed, with several large pathes of snow.

Lots of side streets have some slush and ice on it but mostly clear. However, I did run into a couple roads that had some sections that were completely covered in snow.

With this in mind I think there is definitely a possibility of a delay. But do your homework.

Surprise Snow…not.

Sorry I haven’t updated in sooo long since the beginning of the storm. Don’t get me wrong I have been working like crazy with this storm and have done a lot with footsforecast.org. Whenever I am not updating go straight to footsforecast and look at the Central MD page. I am directly updating into that.

This storm gave us around 6-7 inches and will exit the area from 7-730 tonight. Three more bands of moderate to heavy snow will drop another inch or so of snow.

Roads are awful, parking lots haven’t even been thought about, and sidewalks are non-existent.

Now the question is…. will this storm affect school Monday? My gut feeling right now is a 2-hr delay, but my confidence in my decision will increase as the day goes on tomorrow. Adios!

Weekend Snow

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The models once had a huge snow storm for our area…. however now it seems if any snow were to come in our area, accumulations would be light. This would be some where around 1-3 inches, and thats being generous I think.

<>Unfortunately the storm will arrive on Saturday not having any impact on schools, unless a huge change were to occur (unlikely) and we were to get a big kahuna type storm, then schools would be affected early next week.

You can see how my forecast differs from our collaborated forecast on footsforecast.

Bleh..

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Sorry everybody… I was wrong. First time in a while prediction didn’t verify. :(

What happened… Sleet tranisitioned over to freezing rain/rain early, and never transitioned back. I was under the impression that freezing rain, would switch back over to sleet. The reason for this is mainly due to the temperatures around 5000 feet not being cold eneough to freeze the precip. All night is was hovering around or below 32, so any sleet that fell would have stuck. Last night I had major concerns about this, and realized it was too late to inform anybody.

<>It may start snow/sleeting later on today, which may cause some issues but Carroll County mainly bases their determination for delay/closing on observations. This means that the weather/road conditions must be bad now, for them to make any decisions.

<>Well once again sorry for the misinformation! Let’s hope this is my only bust of the year!

<>Pooch apologizes as well.

Final Prediction

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Sorry this is late.

I am sticking with my prediction, which is no school!

Because of the early dismissal there will be no school. Conditions would meet 2hr delay criteria, and coming to school for an hour will not happen!!

Sleet has already started and will continue through the night. It may transition to freezing rain overnight, which would cause a good icing.

Look for around an inch of slushy stuff tomorrow morning.

Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up at 10!

Good night!

Another Thursday Night/Friday Morning Special

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Low pressure over Arkansas will move our way today and a coastal low should form off of Cape Hatteras.
Should be a slushy 1-2 inches of snow/sleet, with possible light ice accumulation.
I am kind of low on time right now so I will be rather vague and not detailed.
Getting to the point, because of the early dismissal already in place for tomorrow, I do not see us going to school. This also includes my fans in Howard County.
This is an early prediction, so check back at 9:00 tonight for my final prediction.

End of the Week

Monday, January 18th, 2010

There is a storm a loomin for the end of the week. Looks like it will make its approach Thursday evening. Get pumped up Thursday night/Friday morning and then outta here during the day Friday.

Current indications are that it may be an event that will bring a mixed bag of precip. Some snow Thursday night and then some sleet/freezing rain/rain Friday.

Whether or not we go to school depends on how long the temperatures can stay below freezing. With the early dismissal already in place, conditions that represent a two hour delay is all we need to get off, which makes it more likely for us to be out.

This is still a good 4-5 days out so many things will change. However, placement of a high pressure seems to be in southern Canada during the storm, then exiting after the storm’s arrival. The original placement of the high is a very good location for winter storms in our area. A reinforcing high pressure may be a player, but it will likely have to sink more south than models are currently indicating to help us out.

Because mid 40’s are forecasted for this week, I do not believe there will be an arctic surge of air present to make this an all snow event. There will definitely be some sort of rain involved, whether it be freezing rain or just plain ol’ rain.

Check back for updates as the days get closer to storm day!

Snow…..?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Sunday/Monday of next week is showing signs of a wintry situation and maybe an extended break?

A warm up this week will bring temperatures back to “normal”. This warm up will cause a precipitation type problem this weekend.

Current thinking is a mix of slop Sunday into Monday. However, the possibilities include; all snow, sleet/freezing rain/rain, or no precip.

So pretty much… anything can happen.

For my and others detailed analysis of the storm check out the winter storm cast zone on footsforecast. .

Prediction

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

This is a tough one but I am going to stick with my guns and say a two-hour delay. Storm is not looking too impressive and its looking like its going to end earlier than expected too.

No school is still in the possibility, text me if you want me to let you know if I think no school sometime later tonight.

Update: Morning will begin with 2-hr delay, then possible 2nd round of snow that could end up closing school.

Will There Be School?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Fast moving Clipper system is bringing snow to Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and parts of Western Kentucky. The center of low pressure is currently spinning in southern Minnesota and directing the storm our way.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10pm tonight to 10am tomorrow morning calling for 1-3 inches, where the higher amounts are closer to the Mason-Dixon line.

Some early indications point to that this storm may overperform in snow totals. Check out footsforecast for the latest updates as I am part of the forecasting team.

So for school tomorrow… I can almost guarantee a two-hour delay because the heaviest of snow will occur between 3-7 Friday morning. That period of snowfall will occur during that 5 o’clock time frame where the schools will make there decision. Now if we are to pick up more around 3-4 inches, then well no school. So lets just see how things go today with models, radar…etc, and I will update later today with my final prediction.
