Tonight and Tomorrow (12/30)

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Sorry for the lack of an update. Storm will begin around 4am with some light snow. Sometime during the night it will mix in with snow, sleet, and freezing rain. After 11am its looking like it will be all rain. Accumulation of 1-3 inches of snow and sleet can be expected. The it will all be washed away!<> We were pretty close to the all snow line. If the storm were stronger the low would have pulled in cold air and we would have been in for a nice snow storm. Of course thats how it ended up last time so we can’t be greedy. In the long range, different atmospheric conditions in the coming to weeks are favorable for a good east coast storm. I will let you know how its looking!

Here We Go Again…

Models are showing a really nice snow storm for our area sometime around New Years Day. About 5 days out, thats pretty good. So I will keep my eyes peeled and continue to update.

<> Also another storm is out there sometime between January 4th - 6th. I am excited to see how this pans out.

A Clean Sweep

No school Wednesday!!

This historical storm gave us a clean sweep and a two week long break!!! Woohoo!

Update on School Tomorrow

Monday, December 21st, 2009

I really do not think we will have school tomorrow. Frederick County just closed Tuesday and Wednesday. So thats my current thinking.

Again, text me if you anything else, because I will be at the game tonight.

School Tomorrow?

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Just did my drive around the area to check out roads and schools. Several neighborhood streets were still completely covered in snow.  The snow was really packed down and about an inch thick. That makes it really hard to for plows to get this snow off the streets.

Piney Ridge Elementary had large parts of the parking lots which still had a lot of snow and ice still covering them. I also checked out Century’s parking lots and they were mostly clear with some little patches of snow and some areas of ice near the sidewalks.

A lot of streets have some slush and are water covered. The big thing about tonight is that the low temperature tonight is 16. Any water and slush on the roads will refreeze tonight.

As for my prediction… well I am having some trouble with this because tonight I am going to the Redskins game which will make it impossible for me to do my last road/parking lot check after the sun sets. So I can tell you now that we will absolutely have a two-hour delay. With a reasonable chance of no school.

This prediction is a little indecisive but its all I got. If anything changes my mind otherwise I will update. Gimmie a text if you hear anything about schools or want an update.

P.S. Christmas there is chance of some freezing rain followed by a lot of plain ol’ rain. So a white Christmas is not looking too probable right now.

No School

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Its that simple. We will not being going to school tomorrow. It will be announced later this evening.

Update: Its official! Tuesday will be interesting. I am definitely thinking at least a two-hour delay but tomorrow I will give final prediction.

Update

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Currently I am measuring 18 inches on my deck. Pretty good. Storm still has another good 3-4 hours to churn out another 3-6 inches. Expect snow to become lighter as the night goes on and completely end around midnight.

This storm will set the all time record for single day snow accumulation in the month of December. Past record was between 12-14 inches, something like that, but this storm smashed that.

<>I really doubt we will have school Monday and Tuesday well its possible. Tomorrow it will not go above freezing so little snow will melt however Monday and Tuesday some melting could occur and then a refreeze is possible. This may help us get out Tuesday and Wednesday.

<>Hope you spent the day out with your pooch in the snow.

24+ inches???

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Some models (which shouldn’t really be considered) are showing some amazing precip totals. Such high precip totals that snow accumulation could be in excess of 2 feet. Im not biting on that yet, but definitely 15+ inches here. Check out current regional radar.

Pressure of off the coast is beginning to churn and Nor’easter is shaping up. Tomorrow expect possible 2 1/2 inch per hour, insane. Thundersnow is also possible, which would be amazing.

In summary, 16-25 inches of snow with heaviest snow between 6am and 6pm Saturday. Currently im thinking no school Monday, and doubtful for school Tuesday.

Have any questions? Lemme know, I will be up allll night with this storm.

This is it…

Friday, December 18th, 2009

This storm is epic. Check out the infrared imagery above.

This massive storm is headed our way and there is no stopping it.Winter Storm Warnings are calling for anything from 10 to 20 inches of snow Saturday, with heaviest snowfall to occur between 6am and 8pm Saturday.

The thing about these storms is that once they are set on a track for this area, it just comes down to wear the heavy bands of precipitation start to line up.I think we will get at least a foot, and if we are in that region of heavy, heavy snow it will greatly exceed that (20+). It is hard to tell what location will be in that sweet spot, but it will be out there. It could anywhere from the eastern shore to the western Maryland. Right now the “sweet spot” is looking to be between Baltimore and Washington, with it extending a little further south.Keep your eyes peeled.

To show how impressive this storm check out this visible satellite imagery . The storm has formed an “eye” over the Gulf of Mexico. Really spectacular.

On Saturday there will be a time period where winds will really kick up and snow will be at its heaviest. During this time blizzard like conditions can be expected.

School on Monday is looking doubtful if everything goes according to plan.Tuesday…Wednesday?? haha we will see.

I will be updating all day today and all night tonight. I will be up alllllll night watching this sucker. On Saturday I will most likely be enjoying the storm outside, but I will update a couple times. Sunday night, check for a prediction for school on Monday.

PS. Comments are greatly appreciated!

Update for tomorrow

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Winter Storm Warning currently in effect from midnight tonight to 6am Sunday morning. Currently the warning is calling for 5-10 inches on Saturday, with more accumulation possible Saturday night.

So far so good. This storm could end up being much more.  In some places in Virginia they are calling for 20+ inches.

<>In February of 2003 they called for 4-6 inches for our area when we ended receiving 22 inches. This is one of those storms that could end up like that. Or not… However infrared, water vapor imagery, and radar images are looking pretty good. In fact storm may start a little early than expected. Right now its looking like we’ll get a good foot.

<>I will update later today with the latest.
