Rain rain…

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Friday afternoon several lines of storms continued to come through our area dropping about 2 inches and producing some crazy awesome lightning. Right now (Friday Night) another line of thunderstorms is passing through our area with more downpours and lightning. Some may wonder why this continues to happen when its not a very large system but just individual lines of storms. Well I have an answer.

There is a mid-latitude trough located above the Great Lakes and it is currently charging south and east. As it moves south it surges up all the moisture and clouds that are situated in the south right near the Gulf of Mexico. Normally something like this would move through fast with a cold front and then our atmospheric conditions would change right after the thunderstorms move through. Well, Hurricane Bill is inhibiting this from happening. It will not let the airmass move through. The two systems act as a funnel  and in the middle of the funnel is the East Coast. Pretty cool interaction.

To better understand what I am talking about here is some water vapor imagery of the U.S. The black areas are areas of little water vapor and the white is the opposite. There are two black areas to the west and east of us. The one to the west is the drier air mass and the one to the east is Hurricane Bill’s outflow.  Once Bill moves through this interaction will end and so will the thunderstorms.

Saturday expect the same thing. Thunderstorms will be off and on almost all day. I love the interesting weather!

Check for severe weather updates later today.

Tornado Warning!!!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Tornado Warning in effect for southwestern Carroll County. It is heading exactly our way. You will not be able to see the tornado, it will be covered up in rain. So watch out, stay away from windows.****UPDATE***Tornado is currently south of us. A tornado is unlikely for our area, it is south in Howard County.

Hail!!!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Thunderstorm that just went through at 5:15pm brought  penny size hail. Biggest hail I have seen in  this area. Winds accompanied the storm up with gusts up to 40 mph. The problem is no Severe Weather Warning was issued for our area. Whenever there is hail in the thunderstorm it is automtically considered severe. With this thunderstorm temperatures dropped 22 degrees. Expect more thunderstorms and rain throughout the evening.

Cool Video

Check out this cool video of Jupiter’s moon Io. The moon’s shadow is almost directly under it. You can see it’s black dark shadow on Jupiter and then as it orbits you can see the white moon clearly. This occurs because Jupiter, its moon, and the Sun are in a straight line with each other. When this happens Jupiter is in opposition which means, from an Earth perspective, the Sun and Jupiter are in opposite parts of the sky.

Tropics

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Tropical Storm Claudette is no longer. It’s winds have decreased due to the interaction with land. However, as a depression it continues to make problems for the Florida Panhandle. Currently the main problem is training storms. Training storms occurs when different storms continue to pass over the same area usually causing flooding. The bulk of precipitation from Claudette remains offshore at this time. Louisiana may even get some of the storms.

Bill is now a big bad hurricane out in the Atlantic. Expect Bill to strengthen and over the next few days turn into a major hurricane. Looking at the visible satellite imagery you can see that Bill got larger over the last 24 hours. Here is a current visible satellite image of Bill. Unfortunately(or fortunately), models are showing that Bill stays away from the East Coast. Models show him getting close but then turning away. There it still some time for this to change, so keep your eyes open.

Ana is a struggling gal. Things aren’t going to get much better as she runs into the Caribbean Islands. If she remains an semi-organized system, which she barely is now, then she may get into the Gulf for a little and affect Florida. That is a big “IF” though.

Glad the tropics are active!

Tropical Storm Claudette

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Just amazing. Hurricane Center had a low chance of an area developing in the next 48 hours yesterday and this morning they had Tropical Depression Four. Now the depression has strengthened into Tropical Storm Claudette with winds of 50 mph. Conintued strengthening is possible before it makes landfall later tonight in the Florida Panhandle. Crazy stuff. I will update later with more. Heres a visible image of her.

Ana….Bill?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Tropical Storm Ana has recently formed in the Atlantic and remains a weak tropical storm with winds at 4o mph. Its currently interacting with a large area of very dry air, making it hard for Ana to strengthen. Its long range track is somewhat  uncertain but for the mean time Ana will drift into the Carribean and will affect some part of the U.S. later next week. Still a low chance of Ana becoming a hurricane.

Tropical Depression 3 is also brewing in the Atlantic but farther East. It currently has winds of 35 mph. I expect it to become Tropical Storm Bill within the next 24 hours. This system has a much broader area of clouds and convection than Ana currently. Expect this system to affect the lower 48 in about 10 days.

Guerillmo is currently a Cat 3 Hurricane in the Western Pacific. It should continue to have hurricane strength until Monday then significantly weaken as it hits cooler waters. It will have not impact on land but here is the visible satellite image of it.

Tropical Update

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

We have quite the commotion in the tropics, Pacific and Atlantic. In the Pacific there is Tropical Storm Guillermo and the former Tropical Depression Nine, which is now just a remnant low. Nine will continue to be a remnant low with no intesification expected. Guillermo will most likely become a Hurricane, but a weak one. Path is taking it on an awfully similiar path as Felicia. We will see.In the Atlantic there is Tropical Depression Two and a healthy tropical wave coming off of Africa. I am more excited for the tropical wave. The tropical wave has some favorable conditions at the moment to gradually strengthen. Two was on the verge of being named Ana then it’s cloud convection was almost completely lost. This was due to some pretty dry air getting involved with the system. It will most likely strengthen a little bit into a tropical storm. There is low chance currently it becomes a hurricane. Its path may take it to the East Coast. That would be cool. We will see.Conditions the past two nights for the Perseid Meteor Shower were awful. It was almost completely cloudy last night and there is a thunderstorm just to the south of us tonight creating cloud cover. Keep trying tomorrow and Friday night. The activity of meteors won’t be as good as the past two nights, but it will still offer a cool site.

Perseid Meteor Shower

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Tonight and Tomorrow night will be the peak activity for the Perseid meteor shower. Bad news is that clouds might take away our view. Wednesday night will be the better chance for less clouds. Good luck!Thunderstorms are also possible tonight and tomorrow night. Slight chance.

Wednesday

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Hello everybody. A cold front which is located in the Ohio Valley currently, will move through later in the day. This will caused some thunderstorms to fire up a little bit ahead of the cold front. I expect a little line to move through sometime this afternoon  and then after that conditions should be cooler and drier (not as humid).

Got some tropical weather in the Pacific Ocean. Two tropical systems are brewing. First there is Enrique which is a weak tropical storm with max sustained winds at 50mph. Enrique will continue to weaken and then diminish into just a low pressure system. Then there is Felicia which is a cat 2 hurricane with max sustained winds at 105mph. It is expected that this storm will strengthen over the next couple of days. Its projected track is heading very close to Hawaii, however by the time it gets there it is predicted that it will only be a tropical storm, causing not nearly as much damage as it could.

Atlantic tropics remain pretty unactive. There is a tropical waves a little ways off the coast of Africa, but that should be no worries right now.
