What an Awesome Weekend

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Tomorrow through Monday will be the best conditions since November.

It will get into the upper 50’s tomorrow, then the upper 60’s on Saturday, and 70’s Sunday. Bloody awesome time to enjoy the outdoors.

Although it may seem like great weather, we really need some rain. We are abnormally dry for this time, which can be seen on this site

This February was actually the driest February on record for Maryland. We recorded only .26″ of rain. Pretty crazy.

The first chance of rain will be next week, Tuesday or Wednesday. The original forecast was rain this weekend but the models lied.

In astronomical news, a moonlet was discovered in the G-Ring of Saturn. It was approximately 1/3 mile in diameter. Here is a picture taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.

Click on “explore the earth”, then click on North America. Get it centered on the eastern seaboard, then zoom in. Such kool images of the snowfall.

Big Warm-Up

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

<><>Tomorrow will be the last to enjoy the snow, as on Thursday it will be in the 40’s.Expect another brutally cold night, with temperatures in the single digits. Low of 7 degrees. Dang.

There is good news for those of you hoping for spring. By Saturday it will be in the 60’s. What a warm-up.

However there have been some hints of another big snowstorm around March 14th. This is all speculation seeing as its more than a week away, but all the models have it. Something to keep an eye on.

Some cool astronomy news. An 115 foot asteroid came within 45,000 miles of Earth. Pretty crazy. If it hit it us, it would’ve been equivalent of 300 hiroshima bombs. Crazy stuff.

Prediction for Tomorrow

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

It appears that almost every county has called their plan for tomorrow except for Carroll and Howard. Such wussies.

Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Montgomery have all called two hour delays. Practically every county in the south and to the east have closed schools.

I did my scan this afternoon of parking lots and roads. Roads dried fairly well because of the combination of wind and sun.

A couple parts of had some solid ice, and a little slush, but overall good. On side street had a complete chunk of it in snow. Parking lots were definitely wet. Which means they are icy now.

I was hoping for blowing snow tonight to help with the closing of school, but two factors have made this not possible. First, well its just not as windy as it was earlier, when blowing snow was occuring. Secondly, the top portion of the snow melted a little today, and then refroze allowing the powder to stay packed in.

Prediction:

Two-hour delay.

I think they will want to let some stuff thaw and let rush hour leave before sending us.

Howard County- you have a better chance of no school seeing as you got several inches more than us. But Montgomery’s and AA’s two-hour delay really took a gash at that hope.

Tomorrow?

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Well let me say first, if you are reading this, go play outside with your dog (if tangable) and then come back and read this. Cause if you don’t enjoy the snow now, you won’t have another chance. Plus your pooch wants to play.

We recieved 6 inches of snow, while others in Carroll County only recieved 3 inches. Northern Carroll County kinda missed out on this one. However Howard County got slammed. Some places report of 9 inches. I think you’ll being enjoying another snow day.

Main roads are looking good. The sun helped with that. Sideroads are still covered with some snow, and some parking lots are still covered with a good bit of snow. However I did just see a plow go into Piney Ridge Elementary’s parking lot. Bummer.

Tonight winds will be very strong, as they are now. This will cause quite the bit blowing snow on roads and parking lots. Its going down to 9 degrees tonight, so instantly when the sun goes down, all water and snow will freeze.

One little problem, is that the strong winds will also help dry the roads. So its kinda of a win-lose situation.

UPDATE: A large band of moderate snow just formed over us. Who knows how long it will last. It will last until the moisture stops pumping in. This last little bit of snow might push it over the egde. Some snow is sticking on roads.

Snow baby snow.

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Ahhhh hahahaha.

A nice heavy band of snow formed right over us and will continue for another hour or so. It could last long if the moisture continues to get pumped in.

The possibility of no school has greatly increased, and im feeling much more confident. Already 3/4 of an inch, and still snowing hard.

Roads are slushy, with the sides and medians of the roads covered with light snow. Sidewalks are slushy, with some parts totally covered.

Tomorrow, look for some drifts of snow, because of the winds that will persist throughout the night. Possibility of 8 inch drifts, depends on the amount of snow we even get.

I’m thinkin 4-5 inches.

My Frustrating Prediction

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

All of the flippen radar’s that I have seen and been monitoring, say we’re in snow. They’ve been saying that since 7:30. So what the heck?!?!?!.

Atmosphere is probably just really dry, and all of our precious snow is being sucked dry before making it to us.

Another problem I’m having, is that the temperatures are still well above freezing at 36 degrees. Thats awful. If that keeps up, road temps will be above freezing for a long time. Temperatures are supposed to get in the low twenties. I dunno what happened there.

As you can tell I am extremely frustrated and skeptical. However, all majore weather services still have that range of 4-6 of snow. And winter storm warning is still in effect, issuing 5-7 inches of snow. If we get 4 inches of snow in one night, then its game over, no school.

The first batch of snow is moving through currently, however its not physically present. There will be a dry slot moving in late tonight, then the snow supposively starts back up around 3am, and thats when we get hit the hardest.

Right now I’m thinkin 4 inches. I would love more, but 4 is good enough for school.

So I hope this Nor’easter gets its act together. I hope with a fiery passion.

Prediction:

No School.

As skeptical and doubtful as I am, I cannot say were gonna have school, or a two hour delay, with a high of 25 degrees tomm and all these snow predicitions.

PLEASEEE Check for an update later tonight as something might change, and I will post immediately. Hopefully its not for the worst.

P.S. I am not confident at all right about this prediction.  Actually quite nervous.

Mission Impossible

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Like I said last night, all the storm models have shifted westward. Which is extremely favorable for us.

Winter Storm Warning is in effect, issuing 4-6 inches of snow around here. Weather Channel has 4-6, and NOAA.gov has 3-5 inches.

People right along the I-95 corridor and eastward, are getting quite the pounding of snow. 6-10 inches along I-95 corridor. This is a rare example of people in eastern MD getting more snow then the western suburbs of Baltimore/Washington.

If it shifts eastward at all, we will get 1-3 inches. If it shifts westward, expect that 6-10 to come this way. Comeee on westward.

I say we get a good 5 inches(as of now) by 10am tomorrow morning. That sounds legit, eh?

Some good news is that the temperatures stays well below freezing all day Monday.

If all of this proceeds, we will have no school tomorrow. With a possibility of a delay Tuesday.

Wait is this actually happening?

Think about it. We haven’t gotten 6 inches of snow in three bloody years. That is an incredibly long time to wait for 6 inches of flippin snow. Snow is expensive around here.
