If Only Winds Could Close School… or Can They?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I think we will be in school tomorrow on time, bright and early.

I am sure most people agree with me as not much snow will fall tonight.

One thing I must point out…

The only chance we have at a delay, is if it is snowing moderately right at 5am, when the Carroll County guys are driving around checking out the conditions.

Winds tonight will be howling. 30-35mph sustained, 50-60mph gusts. High Wind Warning in effect because of this.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning calling for 1-2 inches of fluffy white snow. I think we will see an inch or less. Hopefully we get more….

Only chance we have at closing is if power outages and downed trees are so widespread that it causes transportation difficulties and power outages at schools. I know Century’s power is underground, but if widespread power outages occur it may alter the school’s decision.

 Here are the current outages.

If anything dramitcally changes, I will certainly let you know. For now check out me on Foot Forecast live video stream which will update around 11pm.

Tonight and Tomorrow Night

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

This storm is definitely a tricky one to forecast.

Here is the low down of what I think currently.

First batch of precip arrives tonight, bringing 1-3 inches across the area. Then coastal low pressure “bombs out” just off of coast and then brings us another 2-4″ tomorrow late evening. Very strong winds with this storm, so expect power outages.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect tonight and then Winter Storm Watch still in effect tomorrow evening.

Take a look at what I wrote on Foot’s Forecast:

Tonight we will see the first batch of precip move through as a light mixed bag of rain/snow. Any rain should turn over to snow by 1am tomorrow morning. Snow may stop for a time Thursday morning, but then come back later in the day Thursday. The most intense parts of this storm should occur Thursday evening/night. This is when coastal low pressure will really “bomb out” producing strong winds and periods of moderate/heavy snow. The problem with this storm is that there will be a sharp cut off with the amount of precipitation. North and East will see more snow than the South and West regions of Maryland.

My current thinking for exact snowfall amounts are; western part of Carroll/Howard and westward (Frederick, Montgomery) will see 2-4″, eastern Carroll/Howard to central Baltimore/Northern Anne Arundel will see 3-6″, and then locations east of central Baltimore (Harford/Cecil) will see 4-8″ with higher accumulations possible in extreme north and east locations.”

As for school tomorrow and Friday… Tomorrow with 1-3″ you’d think we would get a delay.. well that’s possible. But then they will have to decide whether or not they think snow will arrive soon enough to cause driving problems during with school transportation,  in order to decide for early dismissal. Then for Friday, if we get another 3″ a delay may be in stock.

Update at 9pm.

Could it be another big one?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Let’s get one thing straight, there will be a major east coast storm Thursday-Friday. It will effect parts of the southern Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic and possibly US!

Winter Storm Watch currently in effect calling for the potential of 5 inches or more for Frederick, Howard, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil and St. Mary’s counties.

This storm will be extremely powerful bringing powerful winds and heavy snow. It also has huge bust potential for our area. Stay tuned for updates later today.

Rain Rain Go Away…

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Don’t melt my snow pack away…

A little rain is in stock for tomorrow. Nothing huge, maybe a quarter to half an inch of precip. May cause some minor flooding, as storm drains aren’t accessible.

As for snow… Well things may actually be normal this week. That’s a first. But surely, there will be another snow storm before winter ends.

People in the north-northeast may get pounded with a couple snow storms. It’s there chance to get in on a little action, which they can handle.

For updates everyday, check out the Foot’s Forecast video feed!

Have a great week everyone!

Get Ready…AGAIN

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The National Weather Service has a Winter Storm Warning in effect for all of Maryland calling for 10-20 inches of the white stuff. Roads that haven’t been plowed, will not be plowed for a long time.

16-22 inches will surely fall in our area. Amounts will increase as you go east throughout the state. Highest accumulations will occur in northeastern Maryland.

Light snow will arrive between 2-3pm today turn to moderate snow by 6pm, then heavy snow will take us over from midnight to Wednesday afternoon. Snow will end by Wednesday evening.

Check out FootsForecast.org for in depth detail on the storm and our Facebook page for the updates. I will be posting some storm videos throughout the night on the facebook page.

Here’s something cool to look at. This is the water vapor imagery for the U.S. There is an upper-level low pressure in the Midwest (swirling piece) and a surface low coming up from the gulf.

Oh and remember, no school the rest of the week.

Snow Week

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Last night’s snow was an appetizer, hope you aren’t full, because we got a main dish that won’t let you down. This sucker has the potential to be more powerful than the December blizzard we had. There is more precip in place, with higher temperatures. This will most likely produce anywhere between 12-24 inches of snow for our area.

Check out this satellite imagery.

I kid you not, but this already looks very similar to what the ‘93 perfect storm looked like but the storm was already over our area.

During the perfect storm our area received somewhere around 12 inches while places north of us received a general 12-20 inch. In fact localized reports of 30+ were reported. During this storm we had a rare situation where the jet streams encountered a triple phase. This means that all three jet streams (arctic, polar, sub-tropical) will combine and produce massive cyclogenesis (development of low pressure aka. explosion of moisture/wind). Theres a good history lesson for ya.

If 20 inches verifies, we will not have school Monday or Tuesday. There is also another storm possible Tuesday Night into Wednesday getting us that snow week that we have wanted for so long.

This snow will be heavy and wet causing problems with removal and possible roof collapses.

BUST POTENTIAL:A shift northward with this storm could bring possible mixing issues. Any sleet/freezing rain would cut down amounts. But sleet is just as good as snow for getting outta school.

Winter storm watch is already in effect from Friday morning to Saturday night. It states” ACCUMULATIONS…THIS STORM IS LIKELY TO PRODUCE 12 OR MORE INCHES OF SNOW IN THE WATCH AREA…WITH A GOOD CHANCE FOR  LOCALIZED AMOUNTS OVER 20 INCHES.”.

That’s a panic attack for MD.

Check footsforecast.org for the latest on this super kahuna.

Surprise Snow…not.

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Sorry I haven’t updated in sooo long since the beginning of the storm. Don’t get me wrong I have been working like crazy with this storm and have done a lot with footsforecast.org. Whenever I am not updating go straight to footsforecast and look at the Central MD page. I am directly updating into that.

This storm gave us around 6-7 inches and will exit the area from 7-730 tonight. Three more bands of moderate to heavy snow will drop another inch or so of snow.

Roads are awful, parking lots haven’t even been thought about, and sidewalks are non-existent.

Now the question is…. will this storm affect school Monday? My gut feeling right now is a 2-hr delay, but my confidence in my decision will increase as the day goes on tomorrow. Adios!

A Clean Sweep

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

No school Wednesday!!

This historical storm gave us a clean sweep and a two week long break!!! Woohoo!

Update

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Currently I am measuring 18 inches on my deck. Pretty good. Storm still has another good 3-4 hours to churn out another 3-6 inches. Expect snow to become lighter as the night goes on and completely end around midnight.

This storm will set the all time record for single day snow accumulation in the month of December. Past record was between 12-14 inches, something like that, but this storm smashed that.

<>I really doubt we will have school Monday and Tuesday well its possible. Tomorrow it will not go above freezing so little snow will melt however Monday and Tuesday some melting could occur and then a refreeze is possible. This may help us get out Tuesday and Wednesday.

<>Hope you spent the day out with your pooch in the snow.

This is it…

Friday, December 18th, 2009

This storm is epic. Check out the infrared imagery above.

This massive storm is headed our way and there is no stopping it.Winter Storm Warnings are calling for anything from 10 to 20 inches of snow Saturday, with heaviest snowfall to occur between 6am and 8pm Saturday.

The thing about these storms is that once they are set on a track for this area, it just comes down to wear the heavy bands of precipitation start to line up.I think we will get at least a foot, and if we are in that region of heavy, heavy snow it will greatly exceed that (20+). It is hard to tell what location will be in that sweet spot, but it will be out there. It could anywhere from the eastern shore to the western Maryland. Right now the “sweet spot” is looking to be between Baltimore and Washington, with it extending a little further south.Keep your eyes peeled.

To show how impressive this storm check out this visible satellite imagery . The storm has formed an “eye” over the Gulf of Mexico. Really spectacular.

On Saturday there will be a time period where winds will really kick up and snow will be at its heaviest. During this time blizzard like conditions can be expected.

School on Monday is looking doubtful if everything goes according to plan.Tuesday…Wednesday?? haha we will see.

I will be updating all day today and all night tonight. I will be up alllllll night watching this sucker. On Saturday I will most likely be enjoying the storm outside, but I will update a couple times. Sunday night, check for a prediction for school on Monday.

PS. Comments are greatly appreciated!
