Ida’s Leftovers

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Ida is slamming the coast of Maryland, Delaware, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Ida’s remains is currently intensifying off the East Coast. Look for another inch possible from the storm through tomorrow night. Winds will be gusting around 25 mph, with steady winds around 15 mph. Ocean City, MD is going to get a pounding from this storm. Lots of beach erosion and possibly wind gusts of 60 mph.

“Ida” is currently being suppressed from traveling northward by a fairly strong high pressure that is sitting over the southern Canada. These pressure differences are interacting with each other causing relatively large pressure differences over a small area. The high pressure wants to come to equilibrium and therefore a wind flow from high pressure to low pressure is then created. When the pressure differences are large and over a small area, the wind wants to rush from high pressure to low pressure faster.

Meteor shower next week! Earth will pass through the leftovers of the comet Tempel-Tuttle which causes the Leonid meteor shower. The Leonid meteor shower will occur on November 17th/18th. This would be Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning will be the best viewing time. Hopefully there are clear skies!

Oh by the way, meteorologists really screwed up on Ida forecast. It wasn’t even supposed to come up this way! This Sunday look for a little warmer temps (mid 60s), but then remain in the 50’s for the beginning of next week.

NEW POST!!!!

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Hey hey hey… long time no see my die hard poochieweatherers. So I haven’t updated in a long time and I am sorry about that…

But worry no more. Now that we’re getting into winter Poochie Weather will be at full impulse power.

This winter there is a lot of hype about a big winter… A lot of stuff is pointing in that direction and we are definitely due for a good winter, it has been a while. I am skeptical though. No one can predict the weather two weeks in advance, nevertheless two-three months, so we will just wait and see.

As for weather this week, it’s gonna be chilly. Wednesday night thru Thursday there is a clipper coming in from the north. It may bring some sprinkles but it will definitely bring in some cold air. Look for temps to possibly get below freezing Thursday night.

Next week expect a warm-up!

Wednesday night there will be a meteor shower around midnight. However, it is looking like it will be cloudy so that’s a bummer. If it is not cloudy then look in the area around Orion’s Belt. This shower doesn’t contain a lot of meteors but they are big so just be patient.

Cool Video

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Check out this cool video of Jupiter’s moon Io. The moon’s shadow is almost directly under it. You can see it’s black dark shadow on Jupiter and then as it orbits you can see the white moon clearly. This occurs because Jupiter, its moon, and the Sun are in a straight line with each other. When this happens Jupiter is in opposition which means, from an Earth perspective, the Sun and Jupiter are in opposite parts of the sky.

Tropical Update

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

We have quite the commotion in the tropics, Pacific and Atlantic. In the Pacific there is Tropical Storm Guillermo and the former Tropical Depression Nine, which is now just a remnant low. Nine will continue to be a remnant low with no intesification expected. Guillermo will most likely become a Hurricane, but a weak one. Path is taking it on an awfully similiar path as Felicia. We will see.In the Atlantic there is Tropical Depression Two and a healthy tropical wave coming off of Africa. I am more excited for the tropical wave. The tropical wave has some favorable conditions at the moment to gradually strengthen. Two was on the verge of being named Ana then it’s cloud convection was almost completely lost. This was due to some pretty dry air getting involved with the system. It will most likely strengthen a little bit into a tropical storm. There is low chance currently it becomes a hurricane. Its path may take it to the East Coast. That would be cool. We will see.Conditions the past two nights for the Perseid Meteor Shower were awful. It was almost completely cloudy last night and there is a thunderstorm just to the south of us tonight creating cloud cover. Keep trying tomorrow and Friday night. The activity of meteors won’t be as good as the past two nights, but it will still offer a cool site.

This Week’s Weather

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Hope you’ve had a great weekend, enjoying the warm weather.

Tomorrow and Tuesday temps will be in the upper 80’s, with a cool down on Wednesday and Thursday along with showers and thunderstorms.

The sunspot I mentioned on the last post caused 2 Coronal Mass Ejections (CME). If these CMEs were headed for earth they would surely cause havoc. Luckily they aren’t. Check out these cool videos of the actual ejection; movie, movie2.

Summerrrrrtimmmee…

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

<>And the livins’ easy. This weekend will include your first glimpse at summer. Temperatures will rise rapidly between tomorrow and Saturday.

Thursday- 60 degrees.

Friday- 74 degrees.

Saturday- 80 degrees!!

Sunday- 83 degrees.

I look forward to a badmitton filled weekend.

<>In astronomy news…

A 25 day streak of no spots on the sun (on the side facing us) was ended yesterday. One tiny little spot formed and the upper right part of the sun, and now it is quickly fading away.

The reason astronomers keep such a watchful on sun spots is because they are the biggest cause of CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections). The CME is a plasma ejection consisting of electrons and protons. These electrons and protons if strong enough, and if in large quantities enough could really mess up every technological aspect of our life. Currently we are at the minimun of our Solar Cycle.

What an Awesome Weekend

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Tomorrow through Monday will be the best conditions since November.

It will get into the upper 50’s tomorrow, then the upper 60’s on Saturday, and 70’s Sunday. Bloody awesome time to enjoy the outdoors.

Although it may seem like great weather, we really need some rain. We are abnormally dry for this time, which can be seen on this site

This February was actually the driest February on record for Maryland. We recorded only .26″ of rain. Pretty crazy.

The first chance of rain will be next week, Tuesday or Wednesday. The original forecast was rain this weekend but the models lied.

In astronomical news, a moonlet was discovered in the G-Ring of Saturn. It was approximately 1/3 mile in diameter. Here is a picture taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.
