If Only Winds Could Close School… or Can They?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I think we will be in school tomorrow on time, bright and early.

I am sure most people agree with me as not much snow will fall tonight.

One thing I must point out…

The only chance we have at a delay, is if it is snowing moderately right at 5am, when the Carroll County guys are driving around checking out the conditions.

Winds tonight will be howling. 30-35mph sustained, 50-60mph gusts. High Wind Warning in effect because of this.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning calling for 1-2 inches of fluffy white snow. I think we will see an inch or less. Hopefully we get more….

Only chance we have at closing is if power outages and downed trees are so widespread that it causes transportation difficulties and power outages at schools. I know Century’s power is underground, but if widespread power outages occur it may alter the school’s decision.

Here are the current outages.

If anything dramitcally changes, I will certainly let you know. For now check out me on Foot Forecast live video stream which will update around 11pm.

Two Hour Delays

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

So Carroll County guys, we have a two hour delay everyday this week. Woot!

Accumulating snow is not in the immediate future, however there are some storms on the horizon for next week.

WOW.

Both NAM and GFS models agree on 15-21 inches in our area.12-18 inches looks like a good bet for the Central MD area, with accumulations increasing as you travel east.

Arrival time will be between 12pm-2pm tomorrow afternoon and the storm will departure Wednesday afternoon. This hurt this region bad. Some places will have over 50 inches of snow on the ground. I really have no clue what road crews are gonna do with all the snow. Hopefully all roads have been cleared by now, or else it may become impossible to clear them, after the next snow.

Winter Storm Watch still in effect calling for 10+ inches.

Oh and no school for the rest of the week.

School??

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Haha…. no way. I am not going to even consider school until Thursday. If my opinion changes on that, I will inform you.

During the storm I was up all night, out and about making some videos of the conditions. I posted them all on “Footsforecast” Facebook page. Here is one of them

And guess what? We have another storm. That could at maximum bring us 18″. But right now it is looking like 6-12 inches is a good possibility.

This storm will arrive Tuesday afternoon and exit Wednesday.

Here is a good link to see a summary of the storm and a bunch of storm totals

P.S. Carroll and Howard counties are already out Monday.

Two Hour Delay… Locked.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

We will have a two hour delay tomorrow. No if, ands, or buts.

I was pretty confident on no school earlier today, however radar indicates the storm getting outta here a little earlier than expected.

Winter storm warning says storm will be outta here between 4am-7am. I think it will be done with us by 2am.

Right now we have 3.25 inches. With the storm having around 2am and the snow coming down about .5-.75 inch per hour, we could have another 2-3 inches on top of the 3.25 we have now.

I think we are not going to have school, however my confidence is not 100% (more like 70%).

Special shout out to Diana’s mom, she’s been a true fan for long and she waited for this post. Thank ya Mrs. Cindy!

Final Prediction

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Sorry this is late.

I am sticking with my prediction, which is no school!

Because of the early dismissal there will be no school. Conditions would meet 2hr delay criteria, and coming to school for an hour will not happen!!

Sleet has already started and will continue through the night. It may transition to freezing rain overnight, which would cause a good icing.

Look for around an inch of slushy stuff tomorrow morning.

Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up at 10!

Good night!

Another Thursday Night/Friday Morning Special

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Low pressure over Arkansas will move our way today and a coastal low should form off of Cape Hatteras.
Should be a slushy 1-2 inches of snow/sleet, with possible light ice accumulation.
I am kind of low on time right now so I will be rather vague and not detailed.
Getting to the point, because of the early dismissal already in place for tomorrow, I do not see us going to school. This also includes my fans in Howard County.
This is an early prediction, so check back at 9:00 tonight for my final prediction.

Prediction

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

This is a tough one but I am going to stick with my guns and say a two-hour delay. Storm is not looking too impressive and its looking like its going to end earlier than expected too.

No school is still in the possibility, text me if you want me to let you know if I think no school sometime later tonight.

Update: Morning will begin with 2-hr delay, then possible 2nd round of snow that could end up closing school.

Thurs Night/Fri Morning

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

A quick clipper system will be moving into the region late Thurs Night and Early Friday morning. Latest models indicate that the system may be able to hold on to some of its moisture over the App. Mts. or become replenished by moisture from the Gulf. A lot of times these systems lose there punch and only give us a trace to an inch of snow.

Right now I am thinking 1-3 by 10 am Friday morning. If we were to get 2+ inches, school Friday would be doubtful. I think 1 inch would get us a delay for sure. Check footsforecast for the latest in-depth analysis.

School Tomorrow?

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Just did my drive around the area to check out roads and schools. Several neighborhood streets were still completely covered in snow. The snow was really packed down and about an inch thick. That makes it really hard to for plows to get this snow off the streets.

Piney Ridge Elementary had large parts of the parking lots which still had a lot of snow and ice still covering them. I also checked out Century’s parking lots and they were mostly clear with some little patches of snow and some areas of ice near the sidewalks.

A lot of streets have some slush and are water covered. The big thing about tonight is that the low temperature tonight is 16. Any water and slush on the roads will refreeze tonight.

As for my prediction… well I am having some trouble with this because tonight I am going to the Redskins game which will make it impossible for me to do my last road/parking lot check after the sun sets. So I can tell you now that we will absolutely have a two-hour delay. With a reasonable chance of no school.

This prediction is a little indecisive but its all I got. If anything changes my mind otherwise I will update. Gimmie a text if you hear anything about schools or want an update.

P.S. Christmas there is chance of some freezing rain followed by a lot of plain ol’ rain. So a white Christmas is not looking too probable right now.
