Ida’s Leftovers

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Ida is slamming the coast of Maryland, Delaware, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Ida’s remains is currently intensifying off the East Coast. Look for another inch possible from the storm through tomorrow night. Winds will be gusting around 25 mph, with steady winds around 15 mph. Ocean City, MD is going to get a pounding from this storm. Lots of beach erosion and possibly wind gusts of 60 mph.

“Ida” is currently being suppressed from traveling northward by a fairly strong high pressure that is sitting over the southern Canada. These pressure differences are interacting with each other causing relatively large pressure differences over a small area. The high pressure wants to come to equilibrium and therefore a wind flow from high pressure to low pressure is then created. When the pressure differences are large and over a small area, the wind wants to rush from high pressure to low pressure faster.

Meteor shower next week! Earth will pass through the leftovers of the comet Tempel-Tuttle which causes the Leonid meteor shower. The Leonid meteor shower will occur on November 17th/18th. This would be Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning will be the best viewing time. Hopefully there are clear skies!

Oh by the way, meteorologists really screwed up on Ida forecast. It wasn’t even supposed to come up this way! This Sunday look for a little warmer temps (mid 60s), but then remain in the 50’s for the beginning of next week.

Tropical Storm Claudette

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Just amazing. Hurricane Center had a low chance of an area developing in the next 48 hours yesterday and this morning they had Tropical Depression Four. Now the depression has strengthened into Tropical Storm Claudette with winds of 50 mph. Conintued strengthening is possible before it makes landfall later tonight in the Florida Panhandle. Crazy stuff. I will update later with more. Heres a visible image of her.

Ana….Bill?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Tropical Storm Ana has recently formed in the Atlantic and remains a weak tropical storm with winds at 4o mph. Its currently interacting with a large area of very dry air, making it hard for Ana to strengthen. Its long range track is somewhat  uncertain but for the mean time Ana will drift into the Carribean and will affect some part of the U.S. later next week. Still a low chance of Ana becoming a hurricane.

Tropical Depression 3 is also brewing in the Atlantic but farther East. It currently has winds of 35 mph. I expect it to become Tropical Storm Bill within the next 24 hours. This system has a much broader area of clouds and convection than Ana currently. Expect this system to affect the lower 48 in about 10 days.

Guerillmo is currently a Cat 3 Hurricane in the Western Pacific. It should continue to have hurricane strength until Monday then significantly weaken as it hits cooler waters. It will have not impact on land but here is the visible satellite image of it.

Tropical Update

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

We have quite the commotion in the tropics, Pacific and Atlantic. In the Pacific there is Tropical Storm Guillermo and the former Tropical Depression Nine, which is now just a remnant low. Nine will continue to be a remnant low with no intesification expected. Guillermo will most likely become a Hurricane, but a weak one. Path is taking it on an awfully similiar path as Felicia. We will see.In the Atlantic there is Tropical Depression Two and a healthy tropical wave coming off of Africa. I am more excited for the tropical wave. The tropical wave has some favorable conditions at the moment to gradually strengthen. Two was on the verge of being named Ana then it’s cloud convection was almost completely lost. This was due to some pretty dry air getting involved with the system. It will most likely strengthen a little bit into a tropical storm. There is low chance currently it becomes a hurricane. Its path may take it to the East Coast. That would be cool. We will see.Conditions the past two nights for the Perseid Meteor Shower were awful. It was almost completely cloudy last night and there is a thunderstorm just to the south of us tonight creating cloud cover. Keep trying tomorrow and Friday night. The activity of meteors won’t be as good as the past two nights, but it will still offer a cool site.

Wednesday

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Hello everybody. A cold front which is located in the Ohio Valley currently, will move through later in the day. This will caused some thunderstorms to fire up a little bit ahead of the cold front. I expect a little line to move through sometime this afternoon  and then after that conditions should be cooler and drier (not as humid).

Got some tropical weather in the Pacific Ocean. Two tropical systems are brewing. First there is Enrique which is a weak tropical storm with max sustained winds at 50mph. Enrique will continue to weaken and then diminish into just a low pressure system. Then there is Felicia which is a cat 2 hurricane with max sustained winds at 105mph. It is expected that this storm will strengthen over the next couple of days. Its projected track is heading very close to Hawaii, however by the time it gets there it is predicted that it will only be a tropical storm, causing not nearly as much damage as it could.

Atlantic tropics remain pretty unactive. There is a tropical waves a little ways off the coast of Africa, but that should be no worries right now.

Hot Hot

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

<>The next few days around here it’s going to be pretty hot. Temps in the upper 90s. It looks like they won’t get as hot as they thought it might. We will still have predominantly sunny weather.

Andres is dissapating quickly. It is currently a Tropical Depression and will probably be dead by tomorrow.

Russia’s Sarychev Peak volcano erupted on June 12th, and an astronaut had their camera ready to snap this amazing photo.

If you notice there is circular like shape of cloud around the plume of debris. Believe it or not, this circle was formed by a shockwave that the plume created. The plume of ash and water vapor actually penetrated through part of the atmosphere. And now lightning will likely follow in the plume. That’s all pretty nuts.

The First Tropical System…..

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Is in the Pacific. Tropical Storm Andres is currently strengthening off the coast of Mexico. Over the next 24 hours it may develop into a weak Cat-1 hurricane, and brush the Western Coast of Mexico. Hurricane warnings are currently in effect from Cardenas to Punto San Telmo. There is a very small chance for landfall in this area, but it’s unlikely. Another area of concern is the Baja Peninsula. However these are the only two places Andres poses a threat to. By Friday Andres will be weakening greatly.

I’m still waiting for the first system in the Atlantic!!

This week is looking nice, with hot weather and predominant sunshine.

***Update***

Andres is now a Cat-1 Hurricane!

Hanna, Ike, and Josephine

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Yo yo yo

The tropics are busy as ever. We got Hanna, Ike and Josephine, that are all tropical storms, with winds 50-70mph. Hanna is the only storm, that may concern us, currently. Hanna is slightly weakening right now because of the wind shear coming off the northern edges of Gustav. That shear is expected to lessen. Hanna will strengthen slowly and become a Hurricane within the next 36 hours. Its expected to track to the northwest and take a turn north, and make landfall in South Carolina as a strong Category 1 hurricane. The projected path takes Hanna through the eastcoast and straight to our area. Because Hanna will be moving extremely fast, we can expect tropical depression like conditions around here from Hanna on Saturday. If Hanna were to be a Cat 2 hurricane, we could possibly expect tropical storm conditions, with higher winds. We’ll see how that turns out. Tropical Storm Ike is going to threaten the U.S. early next week. There is some uncertainty or where Ike is going to go, either to the Gulf, or to the east coast. In any case, it will be a threat to the lower 48. Both Ike and Josephine are expected to become hurricanes in the next 12-24 hours. However, both will likely weaken because of wind shear, and Josephine will be traveling over some cooler waters, which will aide the weakening. I’ll update tomorrow on the Tropics.

POOCH OF WEEK?!?!?!

Name: LUCKYYYYYY

Owner: The DeArmey Family

Age: 10 or 11

Lucky is a lucky, lucky dog. He was rescued from a dog pound in the heart of Virginia. With that sad face of his, how could you not deny him??? Out of all the dogs I have ever met, Lucky has the most dominance out of them all. He is the king of all dogs. He runs the dog community. However, I don’t think it would be possible if it weren’t for his location at the DeArmey homestead. The DeArmey house is like the base for the pooch community. He always gives an alarm whenever something is sighted near the base. Lucky is known to the dog world as the Luck Pharoah. Although Luck is the pooch emperor, it doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy the joys of a regular dog. He loves a good stick, and his favorite toy currently, is a squeaky rubber pig. He also knows a a nice combination of tricks. If a treat is insight, Lucky quickly sits, shakes, shakes other paw, lays, and rolls over. Good news las perras, Lucky is a bachelor, so if any lil dawggg out there is looking for a nice time out and about, look for Luck, he normally roams the streets making sure everything is calm and collected. Keep reigning Luck, and keep the poochies first.

Laidback Luck.

An embarassing moment for Lucky, as he cant seem to find his crown.

As for the Weather:

Tuesday-Thursday: Mostly sunny. Highs: upper 80’s to the lower 90’s. Lows: Mid to Upper 60’s.

Friday- Few Showers. Highs: Mid 70’s. Low: 65.

Saturday- Remnants of Hurricane Hanna will likely hit our area. High: 83. Low: 63.

TROPICS:

Hurricane Gustav continues to slow down and just pour rain in Northern Louisiana. They are going to get loads of flooding up there, hopefully those Levees will hold, and New Orleans will have dogded a huge bullet. Hanna has become a hurricane! It is a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 80 mph. It is expected to hit anywhere from the northern east coast of Florida, to North Carolina coast. As you can see there is a huge amount of incertainty in Hanna’s track. However, it is expected that a ridge over the West Central Atlantic will stregthen and cause Hanna to turn Northwest and into the east coast of the US. However if that track is more north than expected and Hanna hits North Carolina and near the Outerbanks, we could experience more tropical like features here. Right now it is expected we just get rain and thundershowers on Saturday. One last note, Tropical Storm Ike has formed far out into the Atlantic, and expected to affect the lower 48 early next week.
